Neko's Crate - January 2025
Hey! So... what's going on here?
Well first off, hello! :) I'm Nekomancer, friend of Bønehead from the UK and lapsed raver who loves nothing more than digging for new and interesting sounds. After several nights of me drunk spamming his DMs with a lot of random links, he was like "we should start a regular column to shouting out new/cool music" and of course, I was all-in.
So here we are, or here I am anyway, I don't know if anyone will read this but whatever, right? It's just a nice excuse to ramble about music :)
I'll probably be dropping 5 or 6 links to the best releases I find each month, with a few words about each. It'll be mostly stuff that fits the vibe here on Bøne.FM, but I may throw in something a bit different here and there. I'll also be sticking to stuff you can actually buy, stuff that's outside of the mainstream (no-one needs me to recommend them the latest Charli xcx tune), and mostly recent stuff (but not entirely! If I find something older that needs some love, I'll definitely share it here).
Anyway yeah, that's the deal, on to the tunes!
JUICY SELEKTA - GUERILLA WARFARE [Das Booty]
One of my most recent discoveries and I can not get enough of this absolute weapon of an EP! All three tunes here are peak ghettotech rave bangers with some fantastic MC selections. I absolutely love the sawblade sounding synths on the first tune and the section in the middle of track 2 that uses a similar sound feels like it could have come straight off an Infected Mushroom record. This shit slaps so hard!
T-Mirage - Dark Rhodes/Existence/Flawless [Odysee Recordings]
And now for something completely different! I'm a big fan of jungle/DnB, and especially the kind of oldschool moody and atmospheric vibes that Odysee Recordings usually puts out. This new release from label founder T-Mirage is a perfect example of the sound, with some amazingly intricate drum work and great sample use. I love the understated noir vibes, the whole thing just makes me wanna put on my big headphones and go for a walk around town in the middle of the night.
Akinsa & Offish - Drums Of The Dead [Offish Productions]
Next one's another DnB release but this time from the tribal/half-time/techstep end of the spectrum. We're still in dark, moody territory, but this collab LP has no chill whatsoever. The title track here is an absolute stomper of a marching beat complimented by harsh, chunky, mechanical sounds; proper "dnb soldiers going to war" vibes. Other favourites are Gutterfunk, which is an absolutely relentless assault—like being run over by a train made entirely of drums—and Offish's remix of Primal, which is also relentless but also has an awesome lead synth giving it those retro sci-fi vibes that I love so much about older DnB.
mmWave - Temperamental Circuits [Independent]
I've always been impressed by analogue synths so I was absolutely delighted when I found this EP from mmWave who apparently performed all the melodic parts live. The end result is this lovely album of squelchy, organic sounding, acid-electro/braindance grooves, with a super funky acid house tune in the middle. Big 90s vibes on this release, as you'd expect!
Various Artists - Thank You, Dream Girl [The Tabula Rasa Record Company]
All right last one, and it's a weird one! This is a compilation of music made in a new genre which was inspired by a dream. From the description:
“Had a dream I was at a rave talking to a girl and she told me about a genre called “hit em” that is in 5/4 time at 212 bpm with super crunched out sounds. Thank you dream girl.”
The result is an absolutely insane mix of experimental weirdness that I can't really describe because there are so many ideas and different things going on here, blending all different styles of electronic music. It's not just a random mess though, the compilation was curated by Machinedrum and there's a bunch of other well respected artists on the tracklist showcasing some really interesting and fun to listen-to productions. Check it out!
And, that's it for now! Hope you enjoyed reading/listening, and thanks to Bønehead for letting me ramble on his website :)
